SeaTech Internships
This year’s SeaTech interns will conduct data analysis for the Whale Acoustics Lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Members will learn to analyze whale calls on a computer; look for specific patterns requested by the research team; and communicate results to scientists, parents, classmates, and other Boys & Girls Clubs members.
Interns will analyze acoustic data to find blue whale “D” calls, which are calls produced and exchanged by feeding blue whales. There is a great variety in the length and frequency characteristics of these calls. Because of this variability, the Whale Acoustics Lab has not been able to develop an automated detector for these calls. The work that interns do will help the lab to develop automated detectors for “D” calls. A “D” call detector may provide a means to use these calls in the assessment of blue whale populations. In addition to telling us the presence or absence of animals, “D” calls could allow us to use acoustics to infer specific feeding behavior.
Eligibility
All second year SeaTech members are eligible to participate in the internship program as long as they meet the following criteria:
- attend more than 50% of the training meetings from October through February,
- pass a proficiency test,
- submit a resume and letter of recommendation, and
- successfully answer questions in a 10-minute interview with scientists.
