SeaTech spots Orcas in the OC

The Ocean Institute hosted an event to showcase the SeaTech program to Boys & Girls Club's executives and directors. The presentations were outstanding, but the real surprise for the Boys & Girls Club staff lay off the coast of Dana Point.

R/V Sea Explorer tech. Ashleigh Loth comments on the experience

Having worked out on the RV/Sea Explorer as a technician, I have always heard rumors about these beautiful orcas that scour the coastlines for food. We heard that these transient orcas were off Palos Verdes in March and Catalina around the same time, but they never ventured into our neck of the woods. So the day that we heard that the orcas were here, you bet the Sea Explorer was there to see it. I was in shock the entire time we were in the company of the orcas. There were five total, which were later identified as a female (grandma) and her three offspring (2 females and 1 male). One of the female orcas also had a calf, which was just born last year. Finding this information out made our experience a lot more personal because these orcas were doing amazing things in the water, things that you would only see at SeaWorld with a trainer. They were teaching the young calf how to spy hop and breach. It almost seemed as though the adults were teaching the calf how to interact with humans and boats. I have seen a lot of amazing things out on the ocean, experiences that make you walk away and say "Wow!" and you are never the same, and this was my number one. I always find it humbling that these marine mammals choose to interact with us; it is two worlds coming together. This is a feeling that you can only experience and not explain. Just listen to the boy's voice in the background of the movie; there was not one person on that boat who wasn't touched by these magical creatures. This was such a treat, and were so lucky that we were able to share it with the Boys and Girls Club. Hopefully, these orcas will come back and visit Dana Point again soon.
